Dental Restoration Options for Chipped and Broken Teeth
There is nothing worse than suffering from chipped or broken teeth, and living with it can cause a serious oral health concern. Fortunately, there are dental restoration options available to those who have broken teeth, and they can repair the damage effectively in an efficient manner.
Broken teeth treatment
By understanding the options available to you for your broken teeth, you can make the right decision as to which restoration is most appropriate for your specific circumstance. The following are four restoration options to consider when treating broken teeth.
Dental filling
One of the least expensive and least invasive restoration options for broken teeth is through a dental filling, which restores the size, shape and strength of the teeth being treated. A dental filling is often most appropriate for chipped teeth that do not have severe damage to the tooth structure. For more severely broken teeth, however, a dental filling may not be enough, especially if the tooth root is damaged as well as the visible surface. However, a dental filling is an effective and efficient treatment option for minor cases of chipped or broken teeth.
Dental crowns
Dental crowns are also a popular form of restoration for individuals who suffer from chipped or broken teeth. A dental crown is essentially a replacement tooth that goes over the surface of an existing tooth with damage and works to restore the size, shape and function of the tooth. Each dental crown is specifically crafted to fit the exact tooth on which it is placed. It is a more long-lasting option than a dental filling, and it works well at restoring the appearance and function of more severely damaged teeth. While dental crowns typically work better on teeth further back in the mouth, they are certainly an option to consider for anyone with broken teeth.
Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers are often referred to as “Hollywood teeth,” as many celebrities use them to improve the appearance of their smile. While they are perhaps most commonly used to improve the appearance of a person’s smile, they also work to restore the function, feel and overall health of chipped or broken teeth. Porcelain veneers are customized for each tooth, and they are a very aesthetically pleasing restoration option. Whereas dental crowns may be more preferable for many looking to replace their back teeth, porcelain veneers work really well at restoring the function and appearance of broken teeth that are more visible.
Dental implants
Dental implants are perhaps the most invasive dental restoration option for broken teeth, but they are a long-lasting solution that restores the look, feel and function of natural teeth that must be removed. When a tooth becomes damaged, the first reaction is to try and salvage the tooth in many instances. However, teeth that are severely damaged near the root of the tooth may require removal. In these instances, dental implants work well as a replacement for the broken teeth, and they can last for more than 25 years without needing to be replaced.
